Acne scarring subcision is a specialised procedure designed to treat depressed acne scars caused by fibrotic bands tethering the skin to deeper tissue layers. Using a fine needle or specialised cannula, these fibrous attachments are carefully released beneath the scar. This mechanical release allows the overlying skin to elevate, immediately improving the appearance of the scar.
In addition to physically lifting the scar, subcision intentionally creates controlled tissue trauma. This stimulates the body’s natural wound-healing response, leading to the formation of new collagen in the treated area. Over time, this collagen deposition further smooths the skin surface and improves texture.
The procedure is particularly effective for rolling and boxcar scars and is often combined with other treatments such as microneedling or laser therapy for optimal results.
Bruising, swelling, and tenderness are expected due to the nature of the treatment and typically resolve within 1–2 weeks. As collagen continues to remodel over several months, results become progressively more noticeable, with long-term improvement in skin texture and contour.
